Elon Musk: AI will surpass human intelligence next year

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims that artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass human reasoning by the end of 2025.

During a live stream with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, on Twitter/X, Musk reiterated his belief that AI, particularly in the form of large language models, will soon surpass the cognitive abilities of any individual human.

“My guess is that by the end of next year we will have an AI that is smarter than any single human,” the Tesla boss revealed, as reported by the Financial Times.

Musk also predicted that AI will surpass the collective intellect of all people on the planet within five years. Elon Musk’s penchant for bold predictions is well known. It remains to be seen whether they will actually come true within the specified time frame. Musk’s track record of meeting deadlines, particularly with regards to technological advancements, is rather inconsistent.

But even though Tesla failed to deliver on its promises of self-driving cars and sales of the Cybertruck, Musk’s optimism about artificial intelligence (AI) increased. He had previously estimated that „full“ artificial general intelligence would not be achieved until 2029.

However, the Tesla CEO cited the reduction in bottlenecks in microchip production as a potential catalyst for accelerating AI development. A year ago, Musk supported an open letter. He advocated a six-month moratorium on the development of highly developed AI systems.

Musk himself released his own AI chatbot Grok in November 2023 as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk founded OpenAI in 2015 together with Sam Altman. However, he later left the company due to disagreements. Looking for investors to invest billions in Grok’s parent company, Elon Musk has set an ambitious goal. The value of xAI is expected to rise to $18 billion.

Whether Musk’s predictions regarding artificial intelligence will prove to be accurate remains to be seen.
